Artelia has acquired a majority stake in Principia, consolidating its position as a world leader in maritime, port and offshore engineering
Artelia is announcing that it has become a majority shareholder in the engineering company Principia, specialising in consulting engineering for marine activities in the offshore, nuclear, and naval and civil defence sectors.
In acquiring 66% of the company’s shares, Artelia demonstrates its intention:
- to develop its offshore activities (Oil & Gas and wind power) by joining forces with shareholder NPCC (National Petroleum Construction Company) based in the United Arab Emirates, whose holding remains unchanged at 33%;
- to reinforce its naval defence activities, including alongside Naval Group which has historically been shareholder of Principia and remains a strategic partner for the future.
As one of the ten leading maritime engineering companies on the international scene and a leading European player in the building, infrastructure and industry sectors, the Artelia Group is thus extending its expertise in the maritime engineering sector into offshore engineering and floating structures, adding to its long-standing activities in port and coastal engineering.
Driven by strong synergies, this strategic merger will meet the pressing industry expectations in terms of marine renewable energy development.
Uniting to serve the strategic interests of large industrial groups
Having been partners for more than ten years to meet the increasingly demanding requirements of their major industrial clients, Principia and Artelia share strong complementary capabilities in terms of activity sectors, expertise, and geographical locations.
With 100 employees, Principia is one of the very few engineering consultancies to have cutting-edge skills in the modelling, design and sizing of fixed and floating structures. Complementing Artelia’s skills in numerical and physical modelling, this specific expertise has allowed it to build a strong reputation amongst leading industrial players in the oil, gas, nuclear and renewable energy sectors and in naval engineering.
Principia regularly carries out research and innovation activities for its main industrial clients, in order to anticipate and offer efficient responses to the challenges of their markets by designing solutions that will increase their economic and technological competitiveness. Based in La Ciotat and Nantes, both in France, Principia also has subsidiaries in Malaysia and in Australia.
Ambitions firmly focused on energy and international growth
In the face of increasing energy requirements around the world, there is a bright future in the development of offshore activities, with particularly strong growth on the international offshore wind power market.
According to Benoît de Moulliac, Managing Director of Principia: “Joining an international group such as Artelia is an opportunity for us to develop in a more efficient manner and to provide for the expertise and project management needs of our industrial clients around the world, with the best quality guarantee.”
As this agreement was signed, Benoît Clocheret, Chief Executive Officer of the Artelia Group, stated: “For Artelia, which positions itself in the top 10 international maritime engineering consultancies according to the ENR (Engineering News Record) ranking, investing in Principia offers new perspectives for development on the highly buoyant market for fixed and floating structures. With operations in more than 40 countries, our Group aims in particular at building its maritime activities in the Middle East, India and the Asia-Pacific region, also benefitting from the support of our co-shareholder NPCC. Since we all share common values of close relations with our clients, technical excellence and a commitment to people, I am convinced that this merger will rapidly create new impetus for our companies, bring greater value to our clients and open up stimulating perspectives for our teams.”
With 40 years of experience in industry, Principia is an engineering consultancy proposing high added-value services for offshore activities (oil, gas, wind power), naval and civil defence activities, and multi-sector risk analysis including the nuclear sector in particular.
Its teams have sound experience and expertise in numerical analysis of the behaviour of floating structures thanks to its knowledge of fluid-structure-anchor interactions. Principia also publishes and distributes software for offshore engineering: DEEPLINES, DIODORE, and ISYMOST.
