Assessment of risks related to transporting hazardous materials by sea off the coast of nuclear power plants

Assessment of risks related to transporting hazardous materials by sea off the coast of nuclear power plants
Context & Issues

Artelia was appointed by EDF to develop a joint methodology for assessing risks related to transporting hazardous materials by sea for all the nuclear power plants in France. This methodology will be incorporated into the next safety review for the four nuclear power plants located on the Channel coast, i.e. Gravelines, Flamanville, Paluel et Penly.

The objective of this study is to :

  • performing a critical assessment of EDF’s existing methodology for assessing risks related to transporting hazardous materials by sea,
  • proposing improvements that would be easy to implement by EDF, to address the specific characteristics of maritime routes and the particularities of each site,
  • proposing a new substantiated robust methodology for assessing risks relating to transporting hazardous materials by sea,
  • applying the joint methodology to all of the French nuclear power plants, in particular those at Gravelines, Flamanville, Paluel and Penly.
