Strategy for installing buried waste containers in the city centre

Strategy for installing buried waste containers in the city centre
Context & Issues

Pau city centre features some remarkable architectural and historic assets (including a listed sector). The presence of many underground networks (including ancient structures) as well as of shops and tourist attractions means that this study has a number of very specific aspects.

The potential future changes in waste collection methods - the roll-out of specific charging/incentive charging and changes in sorting guidelines - must also be taken into consideration in order to boost the selective collection process.

Project characteristics
  • 68 collection points.
  • 2 to 5 containers per collection point.
  • Located 60 m from users.
  • 15% reduction in terms of collection costs.
  • Scheme implemented over a four-year period.
  • 40% of the investment costs borne by Pau City Council.
