Canal des Pangalanes

Rehabilitating a strategic waterway
Canal des Pangalanes
Context & Issues

The Pangalanes canal stretches for nearly 700 km along the east coast of Madagascar and is the longest inland waterway in the country. It plays a key role in opening up access for remote communities and transporting agricultural products, but navigation conditions have deteriorated significantly due to a lack of maintenance. In the framework of a rehabilitation project, Artelia performed a technical and socioeconomic study of operations on the canal section between Toamasina and Vohipeno. Our teams formulated an assessment and preliminary designs of works to be performed in order to restore the canal and improve navigability.
